Rakhi-The Thread of Love

Today is a sacred festival of Rakhi / Raksha Bandhan.(Raksha -> protection n Bandhan ->tie or some knot).. as of all festival this too have some ancient story after it .Long time back there was some battle between gods and demons, and Indra (the king of the gods) was feeling depressed during battle. At that time Indra’s wife Sachi took a thread, charged it with sacred verses or Mantras for protection and tied it on Indra’s hand. Through the strength of this thread Indra conquered his enemies. Since then till today this festival is celebrated.
Through the passage of time festivals are undergoing modifications. Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi. Rakhi has become a sacred festival for sisters and brothers. Sisters tie them to brothers. Priests tie them to people of his congregation.

History also says in those days, many Rajputs sacrificed their lives to protect their spiritual sisters. Humayun received a Rakhi from the queen Karmavati of Chittor and for that, Humayun carried out his sacred brotherly duty and protected her by opposing his own soldiers.

According to ancient traditions, it is customary to have protection threads that are charged with sacred verses (Mantras) and sanctified with rice, durva grass etc.; to have these tied by people who know the Vedas or by near and dear ones. This protection thread saves from sins on the one hand and removes diseases on the other hand. By tying this thread, protection is afforded for a full one year and all kinds of fears are removed.

Nowadays Rakhis are decorated with soft silky threads of various colours, and also with ornaments, pictures, gold and silver threads etc. These Rakhis enhance the artistry of the people. Within these Rakhis reside sacred feelings and well wishes. It is also a great sacred verse of unity. Acting as a symbol of life's advancement and a leading messenger of togetherness.

Dunno about the history whether it is true or not but I belive in this “bandhan” as the ritual not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, but also transcends the confines of the family.
It’s been almost 3 years I had tied raki to my brother on this day ..though not in Rakhi day but would do later when we meet and get my quota of money from him..again amount wil be minimum but “athula ora santhosam” (feel happy )to get from him..
My thambi is last in the hierarchy in our family so konjam “chellam “ to us.. I still remember my school days..my brother was so small ..so small, hand ..we used to get up in morning ..make arrangement for puja. Not much just rakhi with diya( vezhakku) and some sweet in a plate in front of swamy..in turn would take “aarthi” and put tika(pottu) with" vibudhi" in his forehead.. then tie rakhi ...that small hand would be covered with rakhi..and he used to go to school as it is..This process started when he was studing in Ukg .. earlier he used to give 2 Rs to us. With time the amount changed but not much but raised to some 20 Rs..though quite a small amount but stil would feel too happy to get that amount from him..with passage of time as all are scattered for job, studies ..just missing the day very much …today in this rakhi day I got up early did puja ..prayed for him..called him early in morning at around 4.30 morning ..disturbing his sleep..asked for gift.. his dialog was
Thambi:” kuduthutta pochi.” After some more talk ..
Thambi:“kya mae kama raha hoon ?” ( am I earning)
Myself: u shud save from your pocket money and shud give to us also I added will get the money when I am back to home..
Thambi: said ok..
Followed by some more talks …
with that when I saw my watch it was 9 am ..winded of the talk saying usual slogan..."Thambi pad thambi................."the moment i start the first word ..he would complete the rest and starts lauging ka ka ka kah…as I would repeat the same each n every time when ever I call..still I repeat the same things.. after finishing off my standard statements detached the call saying have to rush to office..routine day started then….

Some of the songs which belongs to this auspicious days are ( see real player is installed beforehand )
