Doordarshan used to be the most talked about channel in India. Not anymore. Only one channel, was being telecasted all over India, but yet any TV one purchased had channel selector with 10 channels. The standard opening tune would be "Pae Pa Pae Pae, Paepe Pae Pae Pae, Pae Pae Pae" (to people to haven't heard this tune this may seem like junk) and not to forget the picturization of dosa being made around idli. All in B&W ( blank and white). If i think now about that, either they lifted the doordarshan logo from chinese yin-yang symbol or korean air flight system and made some modification to it.( dont knwo who copied from whom) Hindi programs were predominant and regional programs were telecasted in the evening and sundays 2 pm .Some used to watch all regional language movies with the help of the subtitle in english.
The telecast would close by night and waking up all night watching some movie, was unheard of. Even inspite of the lack of choice, quality, professionalism,
some shows in Doordarshan were great hits.
Ramayan was one of those.......The one that started it all. The mother of all shows. People from India would watch any film in any language, as long as its visualization is impressive. Sometimes people come to the theatres just to see the graphics. English movies that have been super-hit in India have very good graphics or fight sequences. Examples are Mummy(overtook some of the indian movies), Anaconda, Jurassic Park, Any Jackie Chan movie. The list is endless. But the computer graphics revolution, had not yet hit Indian shores at that time and so, the producers relied on some Vittalacharya tricks(some of which are still being followed by Ramanarayanan). Sunday morning 10 o clock ,it was one of those rare occations when everyone in the family watch the TV together. Watching TV was considered to be entertainment and off the routine then. I don't think its the case nowadays. People watch TV whole day, irrespective of what program is being shown. And there is the luxury of more than 100 odd channels. Switching channels every 2 mins is one game you can play without PS2. The famous scene in this program was { Ambu Chandai (tamil) or arrow fight ( english).
